How to Get Featured in Music Magazines as an Independent Artist
NME, Clash, DIY, The FADER, Rolling Stone and hundreds of niche print / digital magazines still accept unsigned submissions. Here is the framework.
Music magazines are not dead. They pivoted. Most now publish 80% digital, 20% print, but the editorial standard — and the credibility a feature carries — is higher than ever. A 200-word write-up in Clash or The FADER can move more careers than a 100k-stream playlist add.
The magazines that still cover unsigned artists
Global: Clash, DIY, Dork, NME, The FADER, Wonderland, Notion, The Line of Best Fit, Loud and Quiet, So Young, Crack. US: Paste, Consequence, Under the Radar, MAGNET, American Songwriter. Genre-specific: Kerrang! (rock/metal), Mixmag (electronic), XXL and Complex (hip-hop), Songlines (world), MOJO and Uncut (folk/legacy artists). The angle matters more than the music
Editors don't cover 'my new song is out.' They cover stories: 'How I recorded my album in an abandoned lighthouse.' 'The first Kurdish-language indie band signed to a major.' 'From TikTok viral to opening for [big act] in six months.' Before you pitch, write out your angle in one sentence. If it wouldn't work as a headline, it won't work as a pitch.
Who to pitch inside the magazine
Never the generic tips inbox. Find the section editor for your beat (New Music, Reviews, Features). Their name and email is usually in the magazine masthead or on LinkedIn. Named pitches get read; generic ones get deleted.
Press kit essentials
• 300-word bio in third person, written like a journalist wrote it. • Two press quotes from prior coverage (blogs count). • A high-res press photo, both horizontal and vertical. • 3000×3000 cover art. • Streaming links. • Direct booking / press email. • Downloadable WAV for reviewers.
The follow-up
Ten days. One polite bump. No third email. If you get a no, thank them and add them to a private list for your next release with a different angle — angle drives yes/no far more than music quality.
