How to Submit Your Music to US Active and Mainstream Rock Radio Stations

How rock radio really works in the United States — music directors, add dates, Mediabase, the Sunday night specialty show that is your real way in, and the phone-and-email routine that gets unsigned bands spun.

Active Rock and Mainstream Rock are two of the last formats in American radio where an unsigned band can still break through without a label. Stations like WRIF Detroit, KISW Seattle, KBPI Denver, WXTB Tampa, KMOD Tulsa and dozens of market-level rock stations all have local and specialty programming built specifically to discover new bands. Here is how to get into it.

Know who actually adds songs

Two people matter: the Program Director (PD) owns the overall sound and the official adds, and the Music Director (MD) screens new music and often hosts or programmes the specialty show. At most market stations these are the same person or a two-person team, and both are contactable. Corporate-owned clusters run some rotation from a central music committee — but the local specialty show is almost always programmed in-house.

Aim at the specialty show first, not the main playlist

Nearly every rock station runs a local or new-music show, usually Sunday night: 'Homegrown', 'Local Licks', 'The Garage', 'Loud and Local'. These shows exist to play unsigned bands and are perpetually short on quality submissions. Getting on one is realistic in your first campaign. Rotation on the main playlist comes later, after you've shown the station that listeners request you.

Make the record radio-ready

Rock radio is unforgiving on production. You need a professional mix and master, a clean edit with every expletive properly edited (not bleeped clumsily), a runtime under 4:00, and a chorus arriving before 1:00. Deliver a 320 MP3 and a WAV with full ID3 tags and your ISRC. If your recording sounds demo-grade next to the song before it in the hour, no PD will risk it.

The pitch

Subject: Local Licks submission — [Band], "[Title]" ([City], clean edit attached) Hi [Name], [Band] is a [subgenre] band from [City] — that's inside your signal. "[Title]" is our new single, mixed by [engineer]. We're pitching it for [Specialty Show]. Stream: [link] Broadcast files: [direct download, WAV + clean 320 MP3] ISRC: [code] | 3:24 | Clean edit Local proof: [venue] shows, [number] tickets, opened for [act] Happy to record station IDs or come in for the show. [Name] | [phone] | [EPK]

Use the phone — rock radio still answers it

Rock stations publish their studio and office numbers. Call the request line during the specialty show and ask for your song by name (get friends to do the same — genuinely, not as a bot campaign). Call the office mid-morning on a Tuesday or Wednesday, never on a Monday or a Friday afternoon, and never during morning drive. Ask one question: 'Is [MD name] the right person for a local submission?' Then send the email you promised, same day.

Prove local demand

Rock PDs care about one thing: does this band bring listeners? Ticket counts at local venues, a strong local streaming footprint, a support slot with a touring act, or a well-attended residency all matter more than your production budget. Put that evidence in the second line of your email, not on page three of your EPK.

Understand adds, add dates and charts

Official adds happen on a weekly add date, tracked by Mediabase and BDS and reported into the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock panels. That system is designed around promo teams and label priorities. You don't need it to start — specialty spins, local rotation and overnight plays build the story that eventually justifies a real add.

Work the market, not the country

Pick 20 stations inside a realistic touring radius, pitch them all, and route a tour through the markets that respond. A band that gets spun in Akron, Toledo, Flint and South Bend and then plays those four cities looks like a regional movement. A band that emails 300 stations nationwide looks like spam.
